Why Do We Keep Doing the Same Things Over and Over Again?
A friend and I were talking recently about our phones. She laughed as she admitted how often she found herself reaching for it without even thinking. I smiled because I had caught myself doing something similar. I'll be driving, and almost automatically, my hand starts reaching for my phone. Usually, I catch myself pretty quickly. “Put your phone down," I tell myself, usually out loud. It's distracting. It's not worth risking your safety or someone else's.
What struck me wasn't the phone itself. It was how little thought had gone into reaching for it. It was almost as if my brain had made the decision before I had. That conversation reminded me of something else I've noticed over the years.
Have you ever driven a route you've taken hundreds of times? For me, it's I-85, it runs through North Carolina. Sometimes I'll be thinking about work, singing along with the music, replaying a conversation from the day, or mentally planning tomorrow. Before I know it, I'm taking my exit. Then I have this strange thought: "I don't even remember half of the drive."
Or I'll be riding with someone who's visiting from out of town. They're depending on me to tell them where to turn, but because the route is so familiar, I don't speak up in time. Somewhere in my mind, I assumed they knew it too. It's amazing how much of life can happen on autopilot. And it makes me wonder, if our brains can do that with driving...
How often are they doing it with the rest of our lives? I wonder if that's why so many of us eventually ask ourselves the same question: "Why do I keep ending up here?" Not a physical place, a familiar argument, the same stress, the habit we promised we'd change or the reaction we swore we'd outgrow. If we're honest, almost everyone has a version of "Here we go again." Even Taylor Swift uses it as the opening line from the song "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys. "
And when it happens often enough, it's easy to assume something is wrong with us. We wonder, "Why can't I just change?" But what if that's the wrong question? What if our brains are simply doing what they were designed to do?
One of the ideas that has stayed with me comes from neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett in her book How Emotions Are Made. She explains that our brains don't simply react to what's happening around us. They use past experiences to predict what is happening now and what will likely happen next. In other words, our brains are constantly asking, "Based on everything I've experienced before...what does this mean?" That prediction system is remarkable. It's what allows us to drive familiar roads without consciously thinking about every turn. It's efficient and it conserves energy. Most of the time, it serves us well, but efficiency has a downside. Sometimes yesterday quietly becomes today's default. Think about that for a moment.
If conflict once felt unsafe, your brain may predict danger long before anyone raises their voice. If your worth became tied to achievement, working harder may become your automatic response whenever life feels uncertain. If keeping everyone else happy once protected your relationships, saying "yes" may happen before you've even had the chance to ask yourself what you actually want. The pattern isn't random and it isn't evidence that you're weak. Many of the patterns we criticize about ourselves were once incredibly intelligent adaptations. They protected us, helped us belong, and helped us survive. The problem isn't that they existed. The problem is that our brains become remarkably good at repeating what once worked, even when our lives have changed.
That's why insight alone rarely changes a pattern. Most of us eventually understand why we react the way we do. We know the story, our history, and the reasons. But understanding isn't the same as experiencing something different. Real change often begins with one small moment of awareness. That moment matters because awareness creates something we didn't have before…a choice.
Lately, I've been thinking about the difference between repeating and exploring. Our brains become incredibly efficient at predicting what comes next based on what has come before. The challenge is that our brains can't create new predictions from experiences they've never had. They need new evidence which comes from new conversation, new boundaries, new friendships, new risks, or new adventures. Every new experience quietly teaches the brain, "Maybe there is another way."
Think about driving again. If you've taken the same road home for years, it eventually becomes automatic. But the first time you decide to take a different route, you had to pay attention, you noticed things, and your brain became curious again. The new road feels unfamiliar, not because it's wrong, but because you've never driven it before.
Maybe that's true in the rest of our lives too. Sometimes growth doesn't begin by trying harder. Sometimes it begins by becoming curious enough to try something different. Have that one new “blank” and over time, those moments become evidence.
The brain doesn't change because we demand something different from it. It changes because we repeatedly experience something different. Maybe lasting change isn't about fighting the old pattern. Maybe it's about giving ourselves enough new experiences that the old pattern is no longer the only road our brain knows how to travel.
